Director of Data Science

As the Director of Data Science, Dr. Paulus drives the organizational strategy for data initiatives and leads data integration across all operational lines of business. She has expertise in applying clinical analytics to various contexts of quality improvement. She has worked for Quality Insights since 2015 serving in various roles within the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) department; most recently as a data analyst for ESRD Networks 3, 4, and 5. In this role she also led patient engagement initiatives for Network 5. Before joining Quality Insights, she was a registered nurse at Carilion Clinic in Southwest Virginia. 

Dr. Paulus is a health services research whose research endeavors focus on evaluating the quality of healthcare delivery, healthcare outcomes, and quality improvement initiatives among individuals with kidney disease and providers of transplant and dialysis services. Through her role at Quality Insights, she also leads research projects focused on evaluating the 5-Diamond Patient Safety program concerning several components of patient safety among dialysis providers including emergency management, identifying barriers to home dialysis and kidney transplantation utilization, and the screening and management of the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

She speaks and publishes on topics related to kidney disease. She was the chapter editor and author of Part 4 of the Core Curriculum for Nephrology Nursing 7th edition covering topics relevant to infection prevention in nephrology practice settings as well as the 4th edition of Contemporary Nephrology Nursing on the topic of research priorities for nephrology nursing. Dr. Paulus serves as the chapter president of the Old Dominion chapter of the American Nephrology Nursing Association (ANNA), chair designee of the ANNA Research committee, and is a member of the ANNA leadership committee.

She earned her PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University in Nursing with a concentration in healthcare quality. She is a certified professional in healthcare quality (CPHQ), patient safety (CPPS), and certified data management professional (CDMP). She is currently pursuing a healthcare analytics certification from UC Davis.
