About the West Virginia Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Prevention Program

The West Virginia Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Prevention Program aims to prevent and manage CKD by integrating registered dietitians into the care plan for West Virginians residing in the counties of Boone, Greenbrier, Jackson, Mingo, Roane and Wyoming. While the emphasis of this program is on those counties, all West Virginia residents are encouraged to participate.

Quick Overview

Here’s what you need to know about Chronic Kidney Disease—and how our program can help you take control of your health.

What is Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)? Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) happens when your kidneys don’t work as well as they should over time. It often develops silently, with few symptoms in the early stages. Left untreated, CKD can lead to serious health problems—including kidney failure.
Why Prevention Matters The earlier you take action, the better. CKD is closely linked to conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. Managing your health now can slow or prevent kidney damage and protect your heart, brain, and overall well-being.
Services We Offer

Our program provides:

  • Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT): One-on-one sessions with a renal dietitian
  • Telehealth Appointments: Convenient, from wherever you are
  • Health Education: Tools and tips to manage conditions like CKD, diabetes, and high blood pressure
Who is the Program For?

You don’t have to wait for a diagnosis of kidney disease to get support. The West Virginia Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Prevention Program is here to help you manage diabetes, prevent complications, and protect your long-term health—starting today.

Success Stories

“Before joining the WV CKD Prevention Program, I spent hours researching dietary information on my own. Thanks to the program, my eGFR has improved from 45 to 80 since early 2024. This program will be a valuable asset for West Virginians, helping them start kidney care early and improving the overall health of our state.”
